Northern Ireland Screen

The government-backed lead agency for the film, television, and digital content industry

Northern Ireland Screen is the government-backed lead agency for the film, television and digital content industry, driving global growth through boosting the economy, celebrating culture and enhancing children’s education.

The organisation is committed to maximising the economic, cultural and educational value of the screen industries to the benefit of Northern Ireland. This goal is pursued through its mission to accelerate the development of a dynamic and sustainable local screen industry and culture. Northern Ireland Screen provides focused intervention in eight key areas:

Filming in Northern Ireland – helping with all aspects of filming locally; budgeting, studios, crew, locations, permissions and services.

Investment and funding – funding for development and production; skills development is encouraged through both individual and company initiatives, while education and archive, film festivals and cultural cinema receive core funding.

Business and Skills – supporting businesses and individuals through training, skills development and funding programmes.

Irish Language Broadcasting Fund – the IBLF was set up with the dual aim of funding Irish language content of high quality and of fostering the Irish speaking independent production sector in the north of Ireland.

Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund – the USBF was set up to ensure that the heritage, culture and language of Ulster-Scots is expressed through moving image. The USBF also aims to foster the Ulster-Scots independent production sector in Northern Ireland and to fund high quality Ulster-Scots cultural TV programmes for a local audience.

Archive and Exhibition – providing local people with the opportunity to see the widest possible range of moving image, including ensuring access to our rich moving image heritage.

Marketing and Information – developing multi-channel campaigns to market Northern Ireland as a centre for independent film, television and digital content production, selling our locations, funds and facilities to the global industry;

Education – the Northern Ireland Screen Education strategy aims to embed the use of moving image and related digital technologies across the formal and non-formal curriculum. This aims to harness new ways of learning for all our young people, to provide them with the knowledge and skills they need for life and the workplace, so that they can become valued contributors to society. Northern Ireland Screen works in partnership with and provides funding for three Creative Learning Centres (CLCs); the Nerve Centre in Derry~Londonderry, Nerve Belfast in Belfast and the Southern Education and Library Board’s AmmA Centre in Armagh. All three centres deliver programmes for schools and young people in the use of new creative digital technologies. A key element to the services provided is professional development programmes for teachers and youth leaders. Northern Ireland Screen provides funding from DCAL to enable the centres to offer a range of integrated programmes to build sustainability in schools and the youth sector.
