The Walled City Tattoo is looking for talented, creative drummers and percussionists from across Northern Ireland to work with the acclaimed musician, mentor and teacher Yaron Engler. Following the success of the 2013 Walled City Tattoo, which was headlined by the world’s top drumming corp Top Secret, acclaimed Israeli drummer Engler joins this year’s creative team. He will direct the production’s spectacular opening sequence which will centre on the North West’s ship building heritage and incorporate drumming, percussion and industrial sounds along with a few special surprises. Auditions for drummers and percussionists to perform in the show are to be held on Sunday, May 18 in The Playhouse Theatre, Derry~Londonderry.
Engler brings a fresh and contemporary edge to this August’s show and his involvement will help to challenge audience expectations of what a Tattoo event can offer. The 2014 production will comprise a 550 strong cast of local, national and international performers and will entertain and delight up to 18,000 people in Northern Ireland’s largest, bespoke amphitheatre when it returns to the city’s Ebrington Square from August 27 to 30 2014 performers include international tattoo favourites the The Ceremonial Brass Band of the Paris Fire Brigade; Swiss comedy acrobats Star Bugs; the world renowned Imps Motorcycle Display Team; Malta’s Marsa Scouts Pipes and Drums; 200 dancers from the Highland, Irish and contemporary dance worlds from across Ireland accompanied by dancers from England, Scotland and Wales; North West supergroup Sontas; and two of the city’s oldest bands, Britannia Concert Band and Hamilton Flute Band.
Born and raised in Haifa, Israel, Engler began playing the drums at the age of 15 winning the country’s national Telerock Competition in 1993 at the age of 18. Since 2004 he has been collaborating with the world acclaimed choreographer Hofesh Shechter. Touring internationally with the company, Yaron was the lead drummer, arranger and Musical Director in the research and creation of several works including Political Mother which, alongside the Walled City Tattoo, was one of the highlights of the 2013 UK City of Culture in Derry~Londonderry.
Speaking about his involvement in this year’s Walled City Tattoo, Yaron said: ‘I am really excited to return to this wonderful city and look forward to working with some of Northern Ireland’s most talented drummers and percussionists again. This is a very different show to Political Mother but we have some thrilling plans for a very dramatic opening to the show and I am embracing this new challenge.’
